Afghan, Pakistani And U.S. Authorities to Meet in Islamabad For Peace Talks

Top Afghan, Pakistani and US diplomats are meeting in Islamabad to review the peace process in Afghanistan, nearly seven months after talks stumbled over the assassination of Afghan peace envoy Burhanuddin Rabbani.

Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Jawed Ludin and the US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman are leading their delegations in talks two days from Thursday.

Pakistan’s representatives will be headed by Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“The 6th meeting of the Core Group of Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States would review various issues of common interest including the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process, economic development, narcotics, return of Afghan refugees and regional connectivity,” it said.

Aside from the “core group” meeting, separate bilateral meetings will also be held with both US and Afghan delegations, it added.

The trilateral forum was revived last month when senior diplomats from the three countries met in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
