Afghan Security Forces Must be Ready to Fight Against Any Threat in The Country

Afghanistan’s army chief General Sher Mohammad Karimi called on his countrymen to be prepared to defend Afghanistan at any cost if peace negotiations do not bring the desired results.

Afghan security forces must be ready to fight against any threat in the country, Army Chief of Staff Karimi said Thursday during an interview with TOLOnews’ 6:30 program.

But, he added it was not merely the responsibility of the security forces.

“If we are to defend our country in a military fashion, each one of us must be ready to defend the country at any price. We should be ready to even sell our clothes and buy a weapon to defend our country if no one helps,” Karimi said.

Karimi said he expects the third phase of the security transition from the US-led forces to Afghan forces to begin before Nato’s Chicago summit in May.

“We haven’t decided which provinces should be transferred but talks are underway and we will suggest some provinces to the President [Hamid Karzai], then he will decide,” he said.

This comes as some analysts believe that Afghan security forces are still unable to secure the country and if foreign forces withdraw from Afghanistan earlier than the previously scheduled 2014, it will create serious security problems.
