The shopping season promotion also serves another purpose: combating AIDS in Africa. Apple will donate a certain amount made to (RED), a nonprofit created by Bono of U2. The Apple and (RED) tandem is a partnership spanning eight years.

According to Apple “The purchases you make during our holiday shopping events and through Apps for (RED) can create a lasting impact on the future of millions.” There will be a promotional section called “Apps for (RED)” in Apple’s App Store. In this section there will be 25 featured apps with (RED) related content. Proceeds made from the bonus content will go to (RED) in full.

The promotion is slated to continue for two weeks on the App Store and will be specific to those major shopping days elsewhere. Apple will also give out gift cards if customers meet certain qualifications in purchasing—such as picking up an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.
