Last night saw Marvel fans tuned into Jimmy Kimmel Live to see what it was that Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. were plugging. We knew it would be Captain America: Civil War given the schedule that Marvel Studios set several years into the future. Fans not only got discussion but the first trailer for the movie and it is amazing!
Captain America and the Avengers get involved in a major event following Age of Ultron that results in the government seeking to make the superheroes accountable for their actions since there’s a sense that they go unchecked because of their abilities, power, and super technology.
On one side you have Iron Man who wants for the Avenger and other super-powered beings to be accountable for whatever happens in the course of using their powers whereas Captain America opposes this. In contrast to the comics, the movie version picks up after Age of Ultron and involves a different series of events that will play into the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
From the trailer it’s a definite departure from the mega event from the middle of 2006 to early 2007 and entangled multiple major heroes, minor heroes, teams, and non-crime fighting characters. Not only that, but there were long reaching consequences in future story arcs.
Next year will be a busy one for Marvel Studios not only with Captain America: Civil War—which will feature both the on-screen debut of Black Panther and a yet another Spider-Man—but there’s also Doctor Strange on the big screen.
Television will be even more interesting with more seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter on ABC and Netflix’s darker Hell’s Kitchen corner of the MCU seeing the debut of Luke Cage and more seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
