Commitment of Using .IR Domain Names For Iranian Banks And Insurance Corporations

Reza Taghipour, the Iranian Minister of Information and Communications Technology, asked local banks and insurance corporations to use .IR domain extension for their online portals and websites.

Taghipour send separate letters to Mahmoud Bahmani, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, and Seyyed Shamseddin Hosseini, Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, on this subject. According to these letters all the banks and insurance corporations should use .IR domain names and they should replace their domains if they use other extensions such as .Com or .Org. In another part of this letter, the official portals must use hosting services with servers based in local datacenters in Iran.

Also Reza Taghipour asked Mahmoud Bahmani to not let banks’ customers using email addresses provided by foreigner companies when they want to open account in branches and banks should not send any message and transaction details to those emails. There is not any formal legislation regarding this subject and this order may infringe the rules.

Iranian government is trying hard to innovate a national intranet and replace it with the current international internet.
