Facebook Will Warn Users If They Are Targets Of Government-Sponsored Attacks

Facebook Security has announced that it would be alerting users if they’ve been targeted by attackers who aim to compromise their account. The company didn’t mention exactly how it would know the attack is from agents “working on behalf of a nation state.”

On Facebook Security’s official page, Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos stated “We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts.”

The company said that it will only warn users in cases where there is a strong conclusion that they are being targeted. While Facebook has said in the past that it will look out for users’ account safety, it’s always best that users serve as a kind of frontline and keep their own accounts safe.

The usual methods are to use passwords that would be difficult to guess, make sure not to use the same password for different online accounts, and to update passwords regularly.
