As it stands, Derek Medina (31) has been charged with first degree murder in the killing of his wife according to a Miami-Dade spokeswoman who spoke with the Los Angeles Times. Jennifer Alfonso was killed Thursday morning in South Miami by Medina who turned himself in. The couple’s 10 year-old child was found in the family’s home unharmed.
On his Facebook page around 11AM, Medina wrote, “Im going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys, miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news.” From there he posted the body of Jennifer Alfonso on Facebook.
This act of violence is similar in some ways to Bashid McLean, a young New York native who cut his mother’s head off and posed with it on camera from March of this year. Bashid had a history of doing violent things and was also on medication. At the time of his arrest, McLean protested that he needed to be on medication his attorneys suggested saying, “I didn’t do anything wrong! I don’t need anything at all. I didn’t do anything wrong.”
The main difference here is that while Derek Medina posted Tiffany Alfonso’s body, he didn’t pose with it as a trophy nor did he dispose of the body. Medina also turned himself in whereas Medina was found after the severed remains of his mother were found.
According to a statement from Facebook, “The content was reported to us. We took action on the profile—removing the content and disabling the profile, and we reached out to law enforcement. We take action on all content that violates our terms, which are clearly laid out on our site.”
In an affidavit Medina gave to the Miami-Dade Police Department, said things started off heated upstairs and spread downstairs. Alfonso was confronted in the kitchen was punched by Medina and punched him. A standoff ensued after Medina ran upstairs for his gun and Alfonso brandished a knife.
Medina apparently took the knife from his wife and she began punching him again. This resulted in Tiffany Alfonso being shot multiple times, according to Derek Medina’s affidavit.
Medina said he took away the knife and put it in a drawer. Moments later, Alfonso began punching him again, so Medina shot her several times, according to the affidavit.
In the timeline of the posts, at around 11:11AM, there was a post called “RIP Jennifer Alfonso”. This particular post was said to be graphic with the picture of a woman—presumed to be Jennifer—was put up. It depicted a woman in a black leotard on the floor.
The Miami-Dade Police Department didn’t comment on the posts nor on the specifics of the murder investigation.
