According to The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is developing a live action series based on legendary gaming franchise The Legend of Zelda to Netflix. The rumor is that plans are to develop the series as a fantasy epic similar to HBO hit Game of Thrones, but keeping with Nintendo’s family oriented approach.
While no details have been released on how the series will be developed, it’s expected to be a standalone series as many of the games in series with Link, Zelda, and Hyrule being the only significant links. Due to the time traveling nature of some of games there have been several artistic styles, timelines and universes for the game. It is that element that resulted in the different timelines and branches as detailed in the official history The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia.
The plot is pretty simple to figure out as it has always been to either save Princess Zelda or save Zelda and Hyrule from a dark force. Outside of the Metroid series, Nintendo’s legendary five series tend not to have the most complex of series to get into.
The ideal release for the show—should development go through—would be later in 2015 as the anticipated The Legend of Zelda Wii U debuts and would be a better lead in than what was done for Sega’s Sonic Boom. Expect more details should development be confirmed.
