Are you looking to buy some fresh video games this week? Of course you are! Let’s take a look at the top games and DLC to be released for the week of April 7th-April 13th. This week is pretty light when it comes to titles worth putting down money on.
We’ll kick off with one of the shining stars for this week of titles is an update of a RTS classic with Age of Empires II HD Edition. The original was released on PC and Mac in the fall of 1999 and later for Sony’s PlayStation 2 console in the fall of 2001 as Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. Age of Empires II HD Edition will arrive on Steam on April 9th and will feature the original game, The Conquerors expansion, and of course updated graphics. Multiplayer will be possible via Steam’s servers and mods will be allowed thanks to the Workshop, Steam’s storage house for user generated content (modifications or mods).
For those unfamiliar with the Age of Empires series, you basically build towns and armies and gather resources. You’ll also need to take on enemy units and the like and defeat rival empires throughout the Dark Age, Feudal Age, Castle Age, and Imperial Age. Age of Empires II allows you to play a millennium. After passing into the next Age, technology and structures are upgraded. Age of Empires is a very strategic game featuring a good dose of management. If you’re familiar with and enjoy games such as Civilization, Stronghold, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms you may enjoy Age of Empires II HD Edition.
Ubisoft and Nadeo seem really excited about releasing ShootMania Storm on April 10th as there will be launch parties and a big tournament with $100,000 in prizes up for grabs. The launch parties will kick off in Europe and North America. The game will be available on PC through the ShootMania Storm site and on Steam.
Dillon’s Rolling Western: The Last Ranger for the Nintendo 3DS looks to be a great title to pick up via the 3DS’ eShop. The Dillon’s Rolling Western series is a blend of action and tower defense all in a 3DS environment. Normally a tower defense game is top-town view or something resembling isometric along fixed—and later winding–paths. In DRW: The Last Ranger, you have winding paths that you can navigate on an overworld for each location. You’ll need to set up turrets to take out the monsters attacking the towns and engage the monsters yourself. The premise isn’t difficult, but the gameplay gets more difficult with each new town. Luckily after clearing a town, you keep your upgrades in case you want to revisit previous towns to make more cash. Again, Dillon’s Rolling Western: The Last Ranger can be snagged from the 3DS eShop as a digital download.
Next we have Drinkbox Studios’ Guacamelee! which will be available via download for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. It’s considered a “metroidvania” game or an open world platformer in the same vein as Konami’s Castlevania and Nintendo’s Metroid series. It follows a transverse-the-world-and-save-the-girl storyline based with a theme and art style based on lucha libre (the Mexican approach to professional wrestling) and Mexican culture and folklore. This will be available April 9th Stateside and April 10th in Europe.
Other games and DLC that will be released this week include Halo 4: Castle Map Pack, which is DLC and will be released on Xbox 360 April 8th. Age of Wushu is a martial arts-themed free to play MMORPG based in ancient China which you can play April 10th. Soccer Up 3D reaches the Nintendo 3DS eShop on the 11th, Motocross Madness on the 10th for Xbox 360 via the Xbox Live Arcade, and finally Ocean City Racing for the PC and Mac will arrive on April 10th.
Release Schedule for April 8th-April 13th
Halo 4: Castle Map Pack (April 8th)
Guacamelee! (April 9th)
Age of Empires II HD Edition (April 9th)
Age of Wushu (April 10th)
ShootMania Storm (April 10th)
Ocean City Racing (April 10th)
Dillon’s Rolling Western: The Last Ranger (April 11th)
Soccer Up 3D (April 11th)
Again, it’s a pretty light schedule for the week. There are some very enticing games in the list, but the rest are fairly hit or miss aside from the DLC for Halo fans.
