Currently a lot of people in Iran are watching foreign based channels using satellites. It’s not that costly for them to set up a satellite and maintain it. However using satellites for receiving the signals of foreigner channels is legally prohibited in Iran and police usually raid those houses which have satellites’ facilities on their roofs.
Iranian Police Chief Brigadier General Esmail Ahmadi-Moghaddam believes the root of most crimes in the country is satellite and watching its ‘unmoral programs’. “We must stop the spread of alien culture in our country via satellites. Most of crimes being committed in Iran from murder, prostitution to drugs have strict roots in using satellites.” said Esmail Ahmadi-Moghaddam, the head of Iran’s Security Forces.
“IRIB must produce more exciting and interesting programs to attract people. If this happens Iranians are less likely to go towards foreign satellite channels and promoting the alien culture in our country.” Esmail Ahmadi-Moghaddam added. He also praised the actions taken by Police forces against satellite users and called them ‘effective’ in decreasing the number of people watching satellite channels.
Iran’s state run television only offers six national channels and private sector is not allowed to open television or radio channel even under the policies of Islamic Republic.
