Spotify’s Android app will see videos sometime this week. The Wall Street Journal notes that the iOS version of the app will get videos next week. Last year Spotify said that it was entertaining adding video content to its service which seemed like an obvious step with YouTube expanding in music streaming last year as well.
Vice President of Product, Shiva Rajaraman said that Spotify tested the new video content in the US, UK, Germany and Sweden and felt confident that it was time to release it on mobile. As expected, content will be categorized depending on what users are looking for such as news, sports or comedy and will feature content from major outlets such as Comedy Central, BBC, and ESPN and clips from popular shows.
It was pointed out that the video part of the service would be ad-free. Content partners will be paid by Spotify, but Rajaraman said that the company is doing well enough with ads from during music for free listeners and memberships that they can allow for video content to be ad-free.
