In running a demonstration that involved hijacking a Jeep Cherokee, security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek drew the attention of Uber. Earlier today, Miller announced that the duo would be joining the company as part of the Advanced Technology Center.
The two are no strangers to working in large tech companies. Chris Valasek served as director of vehicle security research with IOActive from late 2012 up until recently. Charlie Miller developed a reputation hacking Apple devices. As of late 2012, Miller worked for Twitter as an engineer. The two also worked in Accuvant for a period around the same time.
It’s no surprise that Uber is looking to bolster its roster in this division since it is making steps towards testing self-driving vehicles. Recently it was announced that Uber would work with the University of Arizona to work on digital mapping technology and test the cars in Tucson. Prior to that in February, Uber announced it would work with Pittsburgh’s Carnegie-Mellon University also in the area of digital mapping.
