Apple’s iPhone gets an annual release to wide acclaim and buzz. While the overall design has seen some minor adjustments over the releases, it’s often the non-cosmetic features that can bring in non-iPhone loyalists. This could change should Apple run with a foldable iPhone in the near future.

According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Wamshi Moran, Apple is currently meeting with suppliers in China and could present a foldable smartphone as early as 2020. In a note to clients, it was stated that the next iPhone would be “largely unchanged for the OLED versions although size changes have proved to be a catalyst in the past.” Basically, not to expect anything dramatic from the structure or body of the iPhone in the next release.
It’s a first in smartphones that other companies—particularly major competitor Samsung—have showcased in concept. Up to now consumers haven’t gotten a foldable smartphone in their hands. Needless to say, this is something that would prove to be huge for whichever company gets there first.
Among other competitors interested in the feature Apple could see competition from Microsoft and Lenovo. The closest of the major competitors within reach of the feature is Samsung who could present a foldable tablet or smartphone next year. Overall, this could very well result in Apple pushing towards a foldable device before 2020.
