Facebook Is Deleting Latin American Policy Violators

Facebook is doing some summer cleaning as the Mexico elections loom. In that regard, it has removed around 10,000 fake accounts, Groups and Pages. The targets of the cleaning effort hail from Latin America.

Why Were They Deleted

Facebook stated that the deleted accounts and Groups violated its policies “on coordinated harm and inauthentic behavior, as well as attacks based on race, gender or sexual orientation.”

NYT Report Links Facebook To User Data Sharing With Large Companies

So far this year, Facebook has wiped out a large number of accounts and associated Pages and Groups. At the start of the year, over 580 million fake accounts and 2.5 million hate speech posts and content have been deleted. While the numbers are interesting, also of note is that the platform caught most of this before it was actually reported thanks to its AI system.

That said not everyone is pleased with the job the AI system is doing. A number of users who have posted conservative-leaning comments, topics and posts have seen their content removed as a result of the AI. This means Facebook is in a strange place where it comes to moderating the platform and where it can’t please everyone.
