The release of Google Home—the new speaker assistant and competitor to Amazon’s Echo—is almost upon us and the company has decided to name the Google Cast app after Home.
Again this is a means to bring everything under one umbrella. It’s useful and necessary given Google has so many services, projects, and products and when a couple of services or products are being grouped or promoted as an extension of a particular product, it’s best to not have several names for things.
Home works very similar to Echo and is voice operated and will carry out multiple tasks from music (by connecting to your music services) to scheduling for the day by telling you the day’s temperature and traffic conditions.
It will also connect to smart devices and can handle things such as turning on air conditioning or turning down lighting. Of course, Home can answer general queries.
Google Home is currently available for pre-order in anticipation for its release next month at $129.
