Iran Recalls Envoy From Azerbaijan

Iran recalled its ambassador from the Republic of Azerbaijan following the country’s insult to Islamic and national sanctities.

Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mohammad-Bagher Bahrami left Azerbaijani territory Monday to show protest over insult to Islamic and national sanctities.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has already condemned Azerbaijani government’s measures on Islamic trends, confronting Iranian media and insulting to high-ranking Iranian officials.

Tensions between Iran and mainly Muslim but officially secular Azerbaijan have escalated in recent months after Azerbaijani authorities arrested a number of men with alleged links to Iran who were reportedly plotting attacks in Azerbaijan.

Spokesperson for the Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan Abbas Isgandari said he didn’t know when the ambassador would return to Baku.

A number of protests against the anti-Azerbaijani policy of Tehran and violation of the rights of millions of Azerbaijanis in this country were held outside the Iranian embassy in Baku last week.
