Base on statistics available on Nic.ir , the registry of dot-IR (.ir) and dot-Iran (.ایران) , more than 230,000 .IR domain names registered by Iranians .
Currently there are 234331 .IR registered and active domain names beside 4006 dot-Iran , 2672 co.ir , 1528 ac.ir , 353 sch.ir , 320 gov.ir , 276 org.ir , 153 id.ir and 43 net.ir . Totally 243682 domain names registered via Nic.ir .
Now there are 41 domestic and 10 international .IR registrars .
The registry of dot-IR domain names is depends to Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences which is a governmental organization . Its based in Tehran .
.IR domain names can be freely registered but there are some restrictions for registering Second-level domains :
ac.ir – academic (tertiary education and research establishments) and learned societies.
co.ir – commercial/companies
gov.ir – government (Islamic Republic of Iran)
id.ir – personal, every one have National Number from Islamic Republic of Iran
net.ir – ISPs and network companies approved by IRTCT
org.ir – non-profit organizations
sch.ir – schools, primary and secondary education
