Russia Urges Syria to Speed up The Steps of Peace Plan

Russia urged the Syrian government on Tuesday to work “more decisively” to implement the peace plan of the international envoy Kofi Annan who also called for foreign countries to use their influence on the Syrian opposition to pressure it to cease fire immediately.

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said in a joint news briefing after talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moallem, “We talked with our Syrian fellows. We believe that their movements can be more active and decisive with respect to meeting points of the plan.”

Lavrov mentioned that Walid Al-Moallem told him the Syrian government began to implement the requirements relating to “the use of weapons” in the Syrian cities and towns but did not say specifically that the withdrawal of troops must begin today under the process of the Annan’s Plan.

He said the Syrian opposition groups must adhere the plan and also called for foreign countries by using their influence on these groups to encourage them in order to cease fire immediately.
