UAE Condemns Ahmadinejad’s Visit to Abu Musa Island

UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan condemns Ahmadinejad’s visit to disputed island, Abu Musa.

He yesterday condemned in the strongest possible terms a visit made by Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the island of Abu Musa. Sheikh Abdullah blasted the visit as a “flagrant violation” of the UAE sovereignty over its territories and a “set back” to all efforts and attempts the UAE is making to find a peaceful settlement to Iran’s occupation of the three UAE islands : Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa. However, the mentioned islands are now under the management of the Iranians.

UAE prefers to negotiate with Iran through direct negotiations or resort to the International Court of Justice. “This visit will not change the legal status of these islands which are part and parcel of the UAE national soil, ” Sheikh Abdullah emphasised.

He also said this will interrupt the friendship realtionshgips between Iran and UAE.

Iran, under the rule of the Western-backed shah, gained control of the islands of Abu Musa, Lesser Tunb and Greater Tunb in 1971, as Britain granted independence to its Gulf protectorates and withdrew its forces. Abu Musa, the only inhabited island of the three, was placed under joint administration in a deal with Sharjah, now part of the United Arab Emirates. But the UAE government says the Iranians have since taken control of all access to the strategic island and installed an airport and military base there. The UAE has urged Tehran to agree to take the dispute to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Iran says its sovereignty over the islands is not negotiable but has called for talks with the UAE to clear up “misunderstandings.”

Abu Musa is a 12-km² island in the eastern Persian Gulf, part of a six-island archipelago near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The island is administered by Iran as part of the Iranian province of Hormozgan.
