Last weekend spectators at a Maranhao, Brazil soccer game stormed the field and killed the referee according to the police. Also killed was a player. A statement from the Public Safety Department details the timeline of events. It started with the referee in question—Otavio da Silva—ejected Josenir Abreu from the game. A fist fight ensued and resulted in Silva drawing a knife and stabbing Abreu.
This prompted Abreu’s friends and family hitting the field and stoning the ref to death. According to the report, they then “quartered his body”. Local news also reported that Silva’s head was placed on a stake in the middle of the field.
Abreu died on his way to the hospital and the police took in one suspect so far.
